Storm Shelter Tax Exemption

State Question 696
Tax Exemption - Storm Shelters / Safe Rooms

State Questions 696 allows for a tax exemption for homes having either a storm shelter or a safe room. The exemption would apply to storm shelters / safe rooms installed or added after January 1, 2002. In order for a storm shelter to be exempt, the shelter must be designed to provide protection and safety from a tornado.

Safe rooms must be constructed to standards set forth by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Citizens can obtain a copy of the "safe room booklet" and accomplanying construction plans by calling 1-888-565-3896 and request a copy of FEMA publication 320. If a citizen wishes to order only the construction plans and specifications without the safe room booklet, FEMA publication 320A should be requested. This information can also be downloaded from http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/saferoom/fema320.shtm
