Overview
Firefighters are assigned to one of three shifts, each working a 24hr on-duty and 48hrs off-duty. Work days vary due to shift rotation.
Responsibilities include first aid, fire suppression and rescue work involving personal injury, illness and traumatic situations, working under the direction of the station Captain.
Work involves training for and participating in the preservation of lives in emergency situations. Primary duties are to ride in assigned ambulance or fire apparatus to an emergency scene and, if need, on to the hospitals. Work also involves continual training in emergency and first aid techniques, geography of the response district, efficient operation of medical calls and fire fighting methods. Individuals in this classification are also assigned other related duties when not handling emergencies such as maintaining equipment, housekeeping, and attending schools, workshops and other public events.

Benefits & Salary
The following reflects the base salary figured on 3054 hours a year, not including hourly incentives such as hazardous materials training, instructor level training, college degrees, and other emergency medical incentives.
Initial 12 months
Firefighter/Paramedic Student $33,868 $35,059
Firefighter/EMT-Intermediate $36,922 $38,236
Firefighter/EMT-Paramedic $42,389 $43,855

Eligibility Requirements
- Must be EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic licensed
(EMT-Basic licensure will be considered for hire upon providing an official letter from the applicant’s school indicating they are currently enrolled and in good standing in an EMT- Paramedic class)
- Must have High School diploma or GED
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a valid Oklahoma Drivers License, with good driving record

Hiring Process
- Must pass physical agility test (pass/fail)
- Run 1.5 miles within 13 minutes
- 35 sit-ups within 2 minutes
- 25 push-ups
- Walk 20’ balance beam carrying 20lb weight
- Carry 125lb weight 100’
- Move 15lb weight from standing position, 14 times within 35 seconds
- Must pass written test (pass/fail)
- Interview with Oral Review Board
- Interview with Fire Chief
- Interview with City Manager
- Must pass a background investigation
- Must successfully pass Oklahoma Firefighters Pension & Retirement System physical and pre-employment drug screening
